  No they don't do those things, but I guarantee you they account for much more of the murder numbers than the spectacle shootings the media has made so desirable by our cult of celebrity maniacs.

  Uhh, Freemindfade, that's precisely the POINT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE. So you now seem to agree, that gun violence statistics are driven up, or down by a large host of factors. If gang violence goes up, then so do the stats, if gang violence drops, then so do the stats. Yet, at the end of it all, your still left with the fact that we (U.S.) remain the only developed, "1st world" country, with a CHRONIC mass shooting problem.

  As far as 'celebrity maniacs,' I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about. I think that, you might be referring to well-known people who don't share your views. But, I'm not sure.

  You know you guys also preach about this stuff like you know so much about crime and criminals,

  I'm not sure who 'us guys' are. And as for PREACHING, I've heard enough preaching on here in the form regurgitated sound bites, cut & pasted from the NRA's current leadership. Note: I've had hunting rifles since I was a kid. My first was a Remington .22 cal pump that I got for my 11th birthday. Back in those days, the NRA was all about sportsman type shooting & hunting. If you follow the money, and do a little independent research, you can easily see that this organization has morphed into a well-funded mouthpiece of the gun manufacturing lobby. They WANT TO SELL GUNS! And nothing will stand in their way. I challenge you to research this yourself.

  Rather than preaching, I'm only calling you out, for not being willing to parse through the facts, and see beyond the sound-bites. I've already quoted Lincoln once, please don't make me do it again.

  Violent crimes and murder in America have DECREASED by 50% over the last 20 years

  YES FREEMINDFADE, that's true. Remember the Miami cocaine wars of the 1980s?? How about the Crips vs Bloods in the early 90s?? Yes, these were indeed bloodbaths, which drove up the overall murder statistics nationwide. Someone earlier stated, rather ignoranty, that "regulations & policing don't work." Well, one reason that the Miami cocaine wars subsided was that the US Justice Dept had the FBI and other agencies infiltrate these cartels. Some might say the violence just moved to Columbia, but the point is...it moved out of Miami. Look at New York City. It was a crime-infested armpit of the US back in the 70s and 80s. Times Square was full of junkies and prostitutes. They they had drugs, thugs, organized crime, petty crime, and the gun violence you'd come to expect from drug deals gone bad, ect. Now look at the place!!! Times Square is a damned TOURIST TRAP.

  OK I am sick of this. One sided stats and facts. Does anyone even understand how statistics work??? You can just throw out a number without context.

  Now...let's talk about those gangs and drug dealers for a minute. How many Crips did you ever hear of walking into a Pokemon fest, elementary school, movie theater, mall, a university dorm building, Post Office, workplace, a Luby's, a McDonalds, a Brown's Chicken only to kill a busload of people for sheer entertainment??? How many of them did you hear of sniping at innocent people from long distance, like the DC shooter? I'll gladly answer that...NONE. The fact that gang members & narcos tend to go after one another, seems to elude you. Yes, they are bad. And yes, you'd definitely want a weapon for home defense, if these guys are in, or around your city. But, back to the point, you whine about "one sided stats." Yet, using the whole, tired mantra of: "overall gun violence has dropped" is about as one-sided, and about as LACKING in CONTEXT as one can get!

  That's right, Lisa Rose!! Because the Gunfight at the OK Corral was between armed adversaries. I don't think Wyatt Earp ever aspired to shoot up a school full of elementary aged children.   Wingcommander...you might look into Sealift Command. It's the civilian mariner side of the Navy. They operate the tankers, cargo & hospital ships...like the USNS Comfort. You might be able to get AS (Able Seaman) qualified if you're near a coastal city with a maritime school. They'd probably be more willing to waiver your condition, as compared to the Navy. Again, you'd be a civilian, serving aboard a Navy vessel. You'd have a uniform of some sort...but not exactly that of the regular Navy. You'd go to all the same ports of call, probably undergo Tattoo crossing the equator. Get sh!tfaced in places like Bahrain, and you'd probably 'qualify' for the anchor tatoo on ur forearm.

  Maybe you've tried this already...but, alot if guys don't even know about it.

  Secret Slave Class...thanks for your comments. You said pretty-much what I was thinking, on each of your points. I was going to make a similarly stated post last night, but I was tired & hit the rack. Better you comment than me anyway, given your expertise is in weaponry/security/______ (forgive me if I left something out).

  I had previously mentioned the Air Marshalls who ride on our aircraft. In chatting with them, as well as other law enforcement professionals, and current/former military types, the subject of those wannabee 'Rambos' has come up. Yes, those fat, beer gutted, bubbas. The same ones who somehow think that the mere possesion of a MIL spec weapon (or at least the semi-auto version) SUDDENLY MAKES THEM MACHO.

  In the aviation world, I've run across the well-heeled business professional, who, despite being a newly liscened private pilot, with no advanced ratings, decides to buy they fastest turbo-charged, Beechcraft lawn-dart they can find. Along with that, they'll usually get the cool leather jacket, Ray Ban sunglasses, and a really big, but totally useless Breitling wrist-watch. They're just like the wannabee Rambos, who think that just by possessing a MIL-SPEC weapon, that they are somehow in the same league as the Rangers, Marines, SEALs, ect. Anyway, in the aviation world, we call 'em 'Wannabee Chuck-Yeagers,' and they're often the ones you hear about on the 6 o'clock news, after having smashed their shiney Beechcraft into the side of a hill, at night, in the fog.

  
  

  Some on these posts have cited Switzerland, as an example of a country with high rates of gun ownership. It's true, they do. In fact, it's part of their 'citizen soldier' ethos. In their version of a National Guard, many of them do possess MIL SPEC weapons at their homes/residences. But, they do receive training..not just a one time dog & pony show, but regular, regimented, and rigorous training on operation, maintenance, and SECURING of said weapon and ammo. Along with this training would likely come a large dose of national pride, warrior discipline and HUMILITY. I personally think this is a good model, though I doubt many in the NRA would go for that sort of regulation. And I'm quite sure that some of the fat, obnoxious, bubbas out there would not be able to pass such training in the first place.

  As for Krav Maga...excellent idea. I'm a bit old fashioned myself, as I like regular boxing. It's a style that allows the 'little guy' a chance. It can also be used in tight, crowded spaces, especially if you can get in some body-shots to the solar plexus of your opponent. Downside is, it doesn't teach grappling techniques.

  One last thought...I saw an image, a few months ago, of a guy in a Walmart or Target store. He had his AR-15 slung on, but it wasn't even slung properly. The strap went across his chest, and the weapon was just sorta hanging off his back, pointing at the dairy aisle. Also, he was leaned forward, using his free hands to purchase a pack of beef jerky, and totally oblivious to his surroundings. Anyone, with any modicum of martial arts training, or not, could've easily disarmed this hillbilly and shot him (or anyone else in the store) to pieces.

  The reason there hasn't been another 9/11 style hijacking, is because the US Government has ARMED US Federal Air Marshals on a good majority of the high-risk flights!!!!!!! Air Marshals carrying Sig Sauer pistols!!!

  Wing Commander, you speak as if Air Marshals are on most flights. I can't get into numbers, but I can assure you, that's not the case. I think I can speak with some authority on this, as I've been flying, as First Officer & Captain, for passenger & cargo airlines for over 20 years. It's statistically more likely to be alert passengers & F/As who are first on the scene if an incident breaks out in the cabin. Recent incidents have proved this. My own experience has seen this.

  Yes, some of us pilots are FFDO certified, yet that's really only relevant to a flight-deck breach.

  Yes, the Air Marshal system is a great deterrant, but they need more staff. (Maybe you can apply, Wing Commander). I'll say it again...the previous SOP, pre 9-11, was to comply, comply, comply. Those days are over. Just ask the shoe bomber, underwear bomber, and the many others who have started fights, gotten drunk, forgot their meds, or just overall went berserk and totally apesh!t on many, many domestic & international flights. Then ask the passengers who took action if they'd do it all again. You'd get a resounding, " hell yes!"

  And by the way. Air Marshals have some of the highest weapon qualification, and discipline standards of any law enforcement branch. In speaking with many of them, the last thing they want to see are a bunch of poorly trained, un-disciplined Rambo wannabees walking into Chipotle Grill, Walmart, or Target, with ARs slung over their shoulders.

  It's also funny how Ronald Reagan, the great bastion of American conservatism, so fawned over by those who claim to be conservative, was himself, IN FAVOR OF AN ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN, along with the Brady Bill. Wow! What a hippie, pinko, commie, liberal that Reagan would be if he were around today!! Smh 😏

  How many people were killed in the WTC/ Pentagon etc attacks? How many guns were involved in that?

  Apples and oranges. Question is, how many WTC attacks have been sucessfully carried out SINCE September 11? None
  

  Why?? Because the standard operating procedure (SOP) for US airlines AT THAT TIME was to COMPLY with hijacker demands, and take them wherever they wanted to go. Resisting them on our own, as we flightcrews were taught, would only make the situation worse. Instead, we would use certain code words, transponder codes, or flap configurations to signal law enforcement/SWAT that we'd need their help post-landing. 9/11 changed all that overnight. That's why similar attempts (shoe bomber, underwear bomber) never had a chance. Next time someone stands up with a box cutter on a crowded plane, they're gonna get body slammed in a heartbeat. That's especially true if you happen to have a few current/former military guys onboard.

  Now, contrast that to the nutter who suddenly starts shooting up a dark, crowded theater. Well, you can tackle him if you can even FIND him, or if he doesn't mow you down first. You have a concealed carry permit? Fine, but you might want your NVGs so you can pick the bastard out.

  I think one of the Aussies chimed in earlier, and perhaps they can comment on this: at one time, guns were fairly prevalent down under. But, since the Port Arthur massacre, and subsequent gun 'amnesty' program, there haven't been any similar incidents since. No mall, school, workplace massacres...nuthin.' Hmm, coincidence?? Don't think so.

  Of course there might be 'thug crimes,' home break-ins, foul play, gun suicides in Oz that we don't hear much about in the Americas. Would be good to get an Aussie's view.

  Wing...all your points are accurate, but you're overlooking the 400 pound gorilla in the room. That is the GUN SHOW LOOPHOLE, which allows any bubba, psycho, felon, gang-banger, or ISIS inspired zealot to obtain legally, in 33 of the 50 states, a semi-auto assualt weapon PLUS all the ammo rounds you could want.

  You mention Switzerland. Well, sorry, but while they DO have one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the world, they are ALSO highly regulated. For example, they have background checks JUST TO BUY AMMO. Psych problems are looked at....yes, just to buy a carton of .22 cal bullets for rabbit hunting.

  Yeah...so much for a "well regulated militia" as provided by the 2nd amendment. SMH.

  As far as defending ourselves from King George...well, by that logic, all households should have a missle battery in their backyards, and an M1 Abrams sitting in the driveway. 😏

  Well, after the machete JW attacker at the airport, and the elder who killed his own family before that, and all the THOUSANDS of sex abuse cases out there, all combined with the fact that the JWs are a fraction of the size of bigger mainstream denominations/religions....I don't see how there CAN NOT be some correlation between these incidents, and the ultra-high control cult that is the Jehovah's Witnesses.

  But yeah...there are plenty of nut jobs of every stripe. And easy access to guns in the US doesn't exactly help.
